I want users on my DNN intranet site to be able to do the following:

Suppose Bob wants Joe to look at a page Bob made. The page is for Registered Users viewing only. Bob emails Joe the URL to the page. Joe is not logged into the site, but clicks on the link. He gets redirected to the Login page, and after logging in successfully, gets redirected back to the URL he originally requested.

I have seen sites that do this, but I can't figure out how to do it myself. My site has a designated Login page (which has a different skin from all other pages on the site). The effect of having a designated Login page seems to be that requests to pages the user has no permission to view get redirected to the Login page. However, after logging in, the user is redirected to the designated Home page.

How can I enable this? FYI, I am running DNN 3.2.1

Not sure about returning back to the original page, but I'm sure it can be done. If you use the standard login page it will take you back to the page you were at previously, maybe you should find a way of skinning the default login page rather than creating a separate page? This would have the effect you want. The problem would be setting an autodirect to the login page as soon as you view the page you want protecting, this could be done using a html page set to only be viewable to unregistered users that will automatically set them to login.

I am not clear about what you mean by "the standard login page". There is no page in the Pages list called that - do you mean the DNN generated page you go to when visiting a restricted page? I don't think this is skinnable because it isn't a "true" page.

Why do you say "The problem would be setting an autodirect to the login page as soon as you view the page you want protecting, this could be done using a html page set to only be viewable to unregistered users that will automatically set them to login."? In my tests, as soon as I visit a protected page, I am redirected to the designated login page (if I made one) or the "standard login page".

Anyway, the "standard login page" is useful because, like you say after logging in through this page, you are taken back to the page you originally requested (this does not work actually if you have designated a Home page in Site Settings). If I could just find a way of giving it the right skin ....

The key is to set the Home Page ( under site settings ) to "none specified".  This will allow the login to proceed to the page, otherwise the user is redirected to the specified home page.

Scott - this only works if there is no login page designated in site settings. This is what I have observed:

  1. With designated Home and Login pages - user is redirected to Login, logs in and is redirected to Home
  2. With designated Login page but no Home page - user is redirected to Login, logs in and remains on the Login page (looks rather strange!)
  3. With designated Home but no Login page - user is redirected to DNN generated login page, logs in and is redirected to Home
  4. With no designated Home or Login pages - user is redirected to DNN generated login page, logs in and is redirected to requested URL

So, #4 gives me the functionality I want, but I can't control the skin of the login page. #2 would be ideal if the user was redirected to their requested URL.

Is there something else I can try? I have DNN 3.2.1
