Remove Message and Notifications Elements in Login Bar?

The new 'check Messages' and 'Check Notifications' elements have messed up my site's banner graphics, etc... I would like to remove them (and the user avatar if possible). I am running DNN 7. I found a link on how to change the login.ascx file to do this, but it does not match what is in my installation so I am unsure how to proceed. Thanks in advance.
