Can someone in the know explain the function of the bin/Provider folder?

I ask because I have been testing a provider which installed a dll into the bin/Provider folder and this caused errors when attempting to install it. The fix was to copy the relevant dll into the bin folder.

Looking at the bin/Provider folder, it contains many dlls for commonly used providers. However many/all of these appear to have been copied into the bin folder as well.
