Hi, Ive been asked if it is possible to extend the current Rich Text Editor (Or provide a new one) by one of my clients.

The rub is, I am new to DNN, and have no idea whether the text editor is a module, or an integral part of the framework. So before I go back to them with a timescale I'd like to make sure Im talking about the right options!

So, is the Text Editor (the one people see when they want to edit content) a module, or a part of the dnn framework. If it is a module, are there any replacement ones that you'd care to recommend, or do i need to roll my sleeves up and write my own?

Cheers

Sb

It's a module but not really a module. How's that sound?  It's an integral part of the framework but you can change it. Take a look at the FCKEditor project here on the DotNetNuke site. I'm not sure what your client is looking for as far as extensions but the FCKEditor is pretty customizable. There's also a CuteSoft editor for DNN and I think Telerik has one as well but I've never used either of them except in troubleshooting.

Cheers :-)

I need to get their requirements now I know its possible. Supplementary question. If its a module, but not a module, is it easy to change on an existing installation, or is it something that needs to be added and compiled before the system is installed?

The editor uses a Provider model.  The default provider distributed with dnn is the FTBHtmlProvider, which wraps the FTB control.  There are 3 other editor providers available:

  • FCKEditor - this is the one used in this forum and is available for download as the previous poster commented
  • CuteEdit - this is a standard commercial web text editor, with a Dnn provider included in the package.  I have used CuteEdit (it costs about $150) and it is quite powerful, providing a few features that FTB doesn't do well
  • RadEdit - Teleriks equivalent text editor - not sure of price, but again more flexible than FTB

As far as I remember, both the commercial controls/providers have trial licenses so you can test them.
