Oh gosh, I love the installer utility. I struggle for close to a week using the manual configuration but I just simply can't get it install. and then came across this utility by luck, now finally I start to see if DNN is what I looking for or not.

BTW, anyone knows DNN support LDAP authentication or not.

  1. See Antonio's blog where he lays out the roadmap for the Installer project.
  2. We actually didn't make it a hidden URL because it makes it hard for users to find.  However, you can disable this feature in the web.config.  The Installer should resolve setting many of these values for you the first time.
  3. You are absolutely correct.  Unfortunately we do not know what version of DotNetNuke someone is upgrading from.  Therefore, which files should we include?  When Microsoft releases a new version of Windows, it will not upgrade every version of Windows ever created.  It only upgrades from one version back.  Fortunately/Unfortunately we release new versions so often that we cannot possibly enforce that.  We still have many sites that are still running 2.x or even 3.x.
  4. We certainly need to do a better job here of catching/detecting errors and providing graceful error handling that would help a user correct the problem.

Frank,
We don't mind a little well placed CONSTRUCTIVE criticism.  I believe your comments fall well within that definition.  We are working on the problem and are painfully aware of the issues.  So please keeping plugging away with your DNN installs, help new users in the forums when you can, and keep providing feedback on problems you encounter and how you think we can improve DNN.  2007 is going to be a very exciting year for DNN.  There is a lot going on behind the scenes that will really improve DNN 100% over the coming year and will allow us to devote more resources to fixing these problems and many others.

jbrinkman,

Thanx for the response.  I guess I was a little off base.

  1. As I understand the the installer, that would work only if I had access to run an MSI on the machine (i.e. could terminal serve into the machine).  Alot of us can't do that on our hosting providers.  I was suggesting w run a utility on our home machine that walked us through our settings one screen at a time, then actually wrote out the web.config file and all of the source stuff on our local machine.  We would then take this zip file and upload it to our hosting providers and extract it and we're ready for the upgrade url?
  2. Didn't know that!  Thanx!
  3. I was suggesting an upgrade package for each release.  So for instance I have 4.0.0 installed.  I download the 4.0.1 "upgrade package" that only contains the dll's, ascx, vb, etc... files that were modified/added from 4.0.0 to 4.0.1 and unzip that on my website and then run it.  I'm not suggesting you get rid of the full install files you have now, just add another option. My idea would be to have another option if you faithfully upgraded and were at the current version when a new minor version was released.  For full version upgrades, I don't have a problem doing a full install (i.e. upgrading from XPto Vista).  But for SP1 for XP, I would have a problem doing a full Windows install.  You would have an upgrade package for the prior release to the newly released version (i.e. 4.0.0 to 4.0.1). I'm probably being as clear as mud here! :)

can't wait for these "behind the scenes" improvements.  Sounds really good!!
