Colin:

It is not clear from your post what exactly you wanted to accomplish, was it to upgrade the 3.1.1 site to 4.1.1.???  If that is the case, I don't think that your steps would do it.  Actually, I am not sure if you can  go directly from 3.1.1 to 4.1.1, need to verify this.  Remember that DNN 3.x runs on ASP.Net 1.1 and 4.x runs on 2.0.

Thanks for the reply Carlos.

  • I am following the Installation documentation exactly.
  • I have an existing 3.1.1 installation with many portals under it.  ( I run a hosting business, in addition to being a developer)
  • I want to upgrade to version 4.x
I installed 4.1.1 into a separate directory and copied over all my files and folders in the Portals folder from the old ver. to the new ver.

Then I manually updated the new web.config with the database and machine key settings (and whatever else the docs said to do).

I'm supposed to be able to browse to the default.aspx page and it's supposed to detect that i'm upgrading and do some magic upgrading stuff.  That's where the error occurs.

It's the database that's critical to upgrade.  If anyone else knows how to perform this upgrade manually, instead of relying on the broken app to do it, please let me know.  I can run SQL scripts all day long, etc.
