While you are on the subject and I noticed a release date of February I have to ask about this potential category addition I need and need rather quickly.

The need is for a dynamically created category based on the users ID which is logged into the portal, and a check box for each item in a repository which a user could select and add it to his/her personal category.  It would work very much like a bookmark system for large repositories.

Example of use:
1) Users registers and logs on to the portal, and a category is created with the name of their userid.
2) User browses a large repository of documents, downloads, videos (whatever) and for each item listed there is a check box labeled "Add to your favorites"
3) By selecting the check box it will add the persons "favorites" to their category which can then be selected from the drop down list.

I originally was going to pay someone for this modification and if it is a reasonable request I still would like to make a donation, or pay some one to create this for me.  Let me know your thoughts on this.
Thanks,
simonduz (at) gmail (dot) com

I am not a big fan of tree views and niether are many users.

I develop corporate interfaces that require research and VOC (Voice of Customer) results.  Very rarely do users understand or like a tree view.  If the new module offers a tree view, I would make it an option.  Don't believe me?  Check out how Amazon and other major web sites provide the UI.  Companies spend too much money ensureing the sites are easy to use for users ages 6 to 60+.  Offer a tree view and make the site less useful for some users.

I have to agree with gmilby that dynamically populated drop down menus are a nice to have.

The Dash Board view should be plain links.  Keep it simple for the user.

Example:

Category
sub, sub, sub, more...

Thanks for your input,
I am almost done, and don't worry :) as with most things in the Repository, everything will be configurable through the template engine. For example, in the form.xml file, under the 'Categories' tag, you will be able to specify a setting named 'ControlType' and set it to things like, 'DropDown', 'Tree', 'Menu', 'ExplorerBar'. I'm not going to force you to use any particular UI paradigm but make sure that whichever method you choose, ir will support unlimited sub-categories. If you want to use a tree, just set it to 'Tree' if you want the Vista-like explorer bar, set it to 'ExplorerBar'

For example, even a straight dropdown list ( like the current version uses for categories ) now supports unlimited sub-categories where you can specify the 'separator'.

eg: the 'DropDown' control now renders items like this... with a separator of  "->"

Root Level
Root Level->Sub1
Root Level->Sub1->Sub2
Root Level

Anyway, code is done, a limited beta will probably be ready sometime next week. I'll shout out for beta testers as soon as it passes the 'MikeH' test :)

Here is some late input from newbie to DNN.  It would be nice to have a control for the sub-categories as a seperate control like the Repository Dashboard.  Something that could be dropped on the right or left hand side of the page.  Just a thought.

This sounds great Steve.  For my planning, could you clarify that the option to have automatically appearing/populating unlimited subcategory dropdowns in Header.html will exist in this next release...in addition to the straight dropdown formatted as described in your earlier post and as below...

Root Level
Root Level->Sub1
Root Level->Sub1->Sub2
Root Level
