The social community and dating programs sell off the shelves in the common market. Yet in asp.net, with possibly the exception of "community server", the dating software I have seen has too few features (even to begin with) or simply won't work. In the php world, Joomla has community builder, which even in php still lacks some badly needed components. However, I stayed up 8 hours last night and could not find one program that would even come close to the functionality of a one box solution for a dating site or a social community. At this time, my solution would be to add a profile software program to a registration/user management program. I would then have to hire a programmer to make the customizations on both!

Did you know, I would pay up to 300.00 for a simple one box solution for a community site? Without blinking. I was going to use community server am I better off using it?

I myself believe a social community module, well thought out and built for DNN would be much more powerful!

Here are some of the features I and many other people would be looking for!

I mentioned my thoughts on this in the other thread, but this is a nicely itemized list so I'll bump it to try and get some more discussion on it going. Disclaimer - this is purely my take on your requirements - there may be modules out there I have missed...

  1. Thumb display modes feature a gallery mode - All Smart-Thinker mods that display users now have the templatable profile/list view - see this search page for an example.
Visual modes for dating are: who’s online (gender sensitive), friends online, friends, hot members, new members and random members.- This is quite specific business logic but you would probably start with the core Users Online module and customize it. My UserProfile module does random members and new members (see the PokerDIY homepage - it shows the latest new users and a random profile)
  2. Internal messaging system - Ventrian's PM is the most advanced I've seen of the lot
  3. Members can send flirts  - Very similar functionality to Ventrian's PM - should be slight modification
  4. Instant messaging system with thumb nails - there is a core chat module but it is still in dev. There is also a free one called Mssers Chat or something.
  5. Web logs (Blogs) with thumbs - Modify the core
  6. Comments with thumbs - This sounds like a core function if you can attach comments to any data - but does not exist
  7. Customized member profiles - already exists in core - not quite MySpace though (but the MySpace developers have millions of $$$ in shares ;)
  8. Customized member webpage with video capability - maybe something like XMOD?
  9. Video Page like “youtube” - I would start off with XMOD or maybe BizModule's Ultra-Media Gallery
  10. Video thumbs are displayed on the index page (top videos) - this is a function of UMG
  11. Forums - Either core (but VERY basic compared to more established PHP Forums out there - I get constant complaints from my PokerDIY members) - again, this is purely a case of time and maturement. There is a 3rd party one too (Active Forums) but I try to stick with the core as much as possible.
  12. Video Chat rooms with sound - not sure
  13. Each member can setup their own media gallery - I think UMG can handle this
  14. index page shows top members, videos, music and photos. - Custom modules
  15. Index page shows newest members - My UserProfile module does this -see PokerDIY home page for latest members
  16. Index page shows most popular members - modification of the ST UP module
  17. There are facile forms before the index page. The forms have simple, jazzy and classy photos of members and artists.  - XMOD?
  18. Event Calendar - I like my own Event module but the core one is good too (just not sufficient for my business requirements)
In summary, you looking at $000's to customize the current modules that are out there for a complete working solution. Even the DNN core is not that mature compared to other open-source CMS's that have been around a lot longer - this is also true for the modules.

The harsh reality is that there is VERY little money in module development - I have spent hundreds of days on my modules and they sell for $50 - probably about 20c an hour if you work it out hourly, but there is not a market to sustain raising the prices. Even trivial little changes take ages in DNN module development (a combination of VS2005 and the architecture and lack of module developer support in DNN, but this is changing slowly) - this is why hiring a contractor to custom write modules to match your requirements will be your best bet, but this is going to realistically cost $5000 - $15 000 if you want it done right. Otherwise we'll just have to wait until the current modules and core mature over the next few years to meet your requirements - not ideal...

Ironically I have 90% of the same requirements as you and I am a developer by trade and I have been working on the Smart-Thinker modules for 2 years (full time since last November) and they are still WAY off to meet all the items you mentioned. The other thing I find that is that I can make modifications for PokerDIY very quickly, but it is the time to make it generic so that it can meet more than one customer's requirements that is the time consuming bit, as well as the support - it's actually a lot cheaper for me to concentrate on my core requirements and advise customers to customize my own modules than to try and please everyone at once. This is why I suggested hiring a developer and customizing the "best fits" for your site... but it wont be cheap...

Just MHO ;)
