What I finally did:
Dumped GoDaddy and went with www.iHostASP.net . Went with their Standard service for $8.45 per month and added the optional “Turbo Boost” or something like that for $1.50 per month. That Turbo Boost keeps all the DNN modules in memory at all times.
iHostASP runs DNN 4.4.1 about 10 times faster than GoDaddy. The first time you use a module, or page, in DNN finishes loading at least 10 times faster. I had bought a program, that runs on my desktop, that pings my DNN pages (only about 10 of them) every 5 minutes to keep them “alive”. Even those pages display 1/4 as fast as the iHostASP.net ones.
Once you point your web site to iHostASP, which takes about 4 hours to re-point, bringing up DNN 4.4.1 took 30 seconds – no 45 minutes FTPing the directories over.
I still use XPidea (Link: XPidea.com ) to backup the files into a Zip file that I can then copy over to my hard drive. Cuts the transfer time by 1/10. I would not use it to restore the SQL database but to have a “Hard Copy” of my files on the web site.
I looked at many other hosting providers, iHostASP seemed to be geared towards DNN, will do an DNN upgrade for you for $25 (which I will have them do – they backup everything before the upgrade). They do nightly backups of the SQL to a Backup folder that you can copy over to your hard drive. They also backup that file and all your files and you can have them restore your site to that backup.
WebHost4Life is another provider that I set up an account, but they have no DNN instant load capability (at least that I can find) They do have a 24/7 chat with an technician that I really liked. I’m going to assume the DNN pages load as slow as they did on GoDaddy. I’m still playing around with them and will report back if I learn anything interesting.
The seed is the big difference – 10 times faster loading DNN pages than GoDaddy!!!!!! I know sleep better at night knowing that each night a total backup of my DNN community is made for me - the original reason for dumping GoDaddy.
