We are getting started on a big DNN project here and managment needs some reassurance about performance. We are going to be hosting a relatively large number of sites (up to 3000 +) and the question came up, how many sites can a single instance of DNN reliably support? What experiences are others having? So, how many sites have you seen hosted on one DNN instance? On what type of hardware? If you don't have a lot of sites, but have a lot of hits, that would be good information too.

I don't need exact numbers, but estimates would be nice - I understand that some people may not want to reveal this information.

If this has been discussed before, I apoligize, I couldn't find anything with the search.

There are a lot of variables that affect the potental performance of a DNN installation, including traffic, modules used, cache settings etc.

If you are looking at hosting 3,000+ sites I can almost guarantee that you will need to run DNN in a Web Farm environment as one server can't handle that type of load.  I know that DNN has support for Web Farms but I have not personally used the functionality.

I think for you to get a true "estimate" you need to share a bit about what you are doing so individuals can identify if their sites are similar.  For example hundreds of sites that are mainly CMS sites will use less resources than say hundreds of sites with massive forums.

These sites are going to be mainly CMS sites. I don't think we are going to allow them to have Forums (but I might be wrong on that) for the time being assume it's just CMS sites. Instead of a "Web Farm" we are probably going to look at multiple instances of DNN on multiple servers. Yes I know you don't get the fault tolerance, but it would be simpler. Having said that however, we might look into a web farm on a clustered server.

So what are people seeing per server 100 sites? 1000?

Thanks

It really depends, I tested my environment out to 100 sites...but that was with no traffic and it ran just fine, even in a hosted environment.

I saw on here earlier that someone metioned running 60-70 sites was resulting in 600+ Mb of memory use but the site appeared to be running ok.  I think it really depends on the hardware and configuration.

I personally favor the multiple DNN installations over the web farm route as I have noticed that web farms introduce a whole new level of difficulty...

Hi rhein1969, hope your project is progressing successfully. please share your experiences with the community about which way you ultimately chose to follow... web-farm or multiple-instances-on-multiple-servers?

So what are people seeing per server 100 sites? 1000?

(I may be late for this but anyway...) There are 2 places in reliable texts where i could find some numbers... although vague:

- in the dnn documentation "DotNetNuke Web Farm Support.pdf" it says: "An important item to note in a shared hosting environment is the high density of sites on single web server. It is expected that there may be 1-2000 individual sites running the
DotNetNuke application on a single web server. This factor has significant implications on the web farm support strategy."

- in the book "Professional DotNetNuke 4" in chap-3 it says: "As a portal administrator you may setup hundreds of various websites on the same portal. These can be a combination of parent and child portals..."

curious to know about your progress...
