I have similar problem with Users Online module. For example i check at my site at 2 pm and it shows 10 new user registered. When i check at  3 pm it shows 5 new user registered. When i check at 7 pm it shows 20 new user registered and 9 pm 12 new user registered. I checked everything and asked host about Are you restoring database or something on the server and they said no.

I think Users Online module doing some strange things by itself

OK, I finally got my Users Online module working, what I had to do is change the Cache Time (secs):  in the page settings for the Users Online Module to 1.  It seems to be working much better, hope this helps someone else.

cheers!
