On the surface this would seem to be a relatively simple operation but I just wanted to check with you experts before I got in to deep.  I have DNN 1 level down in a subdirectory of the ROOT.  Because my cheapskate web host wants to charge me extra dollars to point my domains to anywhere but the ROOT I find that I need to move DNN.

Am I mistaken in assuming that I can simply copy all the files (keeping the same folder structure) to the ROOT and repoint my domains and I'm good to go?

Thanks,

You are mostly correct, you will just want to double check your portal alias to ensure that it is proper.  That only applies if you are currently accessing the site via a sub directory in the URL.

Otherwise the change should be just as simple as you expect!

I'm having the same issue, though I'm not as savvy as my the first poster.  Somehow, I originally had it all installed in the root directory, but due to (a very long story) I had to delete it, and reinstall.  I am unable to install to the root directory.  I have fooled with this for a week, what exactly do I need to change in what files?

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

I feel your pain.  I did try moving my DNN 4.4.1 instance to the root but no joy.  There was so much stuff that didn't work quite right I ended up restoring to the original subdirectory.  My web host kept telling me it was the fault of one of the purchased modules I had installed.  They didn't want to listen when I told them it was all working correctly before.  I ended up doing a clean install to the root and used the template function to transfer the content from the subdirectory instance.  I still had some issues but I've gotten rid of most of them after 3 days.  Good luck,

Installing or moving to root, is not easy process. Especially with restrictive hosting companies. For example im using Godaddy and i had to create almost 200 virtual directories to install at root. It even gives some errors. But np, ill figure it out and will post a ultima guide for those friends need root access.

Just a quick tip, if you have trouble with web.config just upload it to a virtual subdirectory (has read, write, web permissions) and move it to root from there. Copying files does not inherit file permissions. But moving files keeps permissions.

For example You have two virtual directories. Lets call them DirA and DirB
DirA has read, write, web permissions
DirB has read only permission

if you copy a file from DirB to DirA it inherits DirA permissions.
but if you move a file from DirB to DirA it keeps read only permission.

You can practise this exercise at your home pc. (Tip: Before starting, Disable Simple File Sharing from Windows Exploper)
