I have a level of annoyances that escalates every time I see this - that error with the vertical menu is due to a DLL being left out of the build. It was left out because it was thought that it wasn't required any more - due to some changes.

The outcome has been so many people now have built and rebuilt their portals because they don't know it's just a missing DLL.

I wrote a blog about it a little while ago - HERE - it shows how to qiuickly fix and then what DLL's to replace.

Let me tell you about my upgrade to 4.4.1 with DNN - It was a mess until I went in and changed from disk caching to memory caching, as that is how I have always run my sites, and without me knowing, upon upgrade, it changed my settings from memory to disk and just stopped my sites and made a mess of it.

From my perpsective, different servers are configured in different ways and as a hoster, I choose to run memory because it runs like a dog when it had automatically been switched over to disk caching on an upgrade. Further to that, I commented out the compression in the web.config file and most of my sites are running PageBlaster from John Mitchell.  This site is running DNN 4.4.1 and it's like a rocket..

But I suggest you fix up your DLL's first so you can get into your site.

Sorry to sound so annoyed, I'm not annoyed at you, just sick of reading this sort of post that shouldn't ever have happened if there had been adequate testing.  I thought that benefactors were doing more testing these days, since they are paying to get the builds earlier.  And at the very least, this should have been patched and rereleased to stop this sort thing happening. Not good for DNN overall, and certainly not good for businesses who have clients who rely on them to deliver sites.

Hope this gets you out of one mess.

Nina,

Thank you for outlining this information.  I am still personally trying to figure out the root cause of the dll issue however as there are people who are upgrading that are having the issue and some that are not.  I for example have completed about 10-15 upgrades from 4.3.5 to 4.4.1 and have not once encountered this error.  Do you have any idea on the specifics behind who is affected?

I got a new 4.4.1 site install from my webhosting service.

I changed the skin to blue vertical full width.

Left the site and closed the browser.

Opened a new browser and re-entered the site.

Site is broken.

I added the 6 missing dlls from my source-code-based install at home and the site magically worked again.

This is a big mistake and should be patched immediately.  Period.
