Hello, I like the idea that DNN supports multiple portals. I'm not sure exactly how it works and would like to establish some clarity on how and when to use another portal. I'm putting together a website which may have multiple themes.

1. Talent/Entertainment
2. Singles
3. Smart Board (Question and Answer)

Would each of these themes be best setup in their own portal or is it best to simply set aside pages on the primary portal for each of these topics?

Thanks

It really depends on how related items are, and how you want to be accessing the sites.

I personally am running 5 portals right now off of my main portal site, because each portal has completly different needs.  But it all realy depends on what you are looking for.

Are you going to have a totally different domain registered for each of the portals?  What about search engines, would you like your three ideas to be found with a common search criteria?  Forget about DNN for a minute, would you have your three concepts as separate Web sites using plain old HTML or as difffent sections of one site?

Remember that DNN offers the capability of hosting multiple sites with a single software install and database but you still have to use your judgement on the site content organization and presentation.  This goes back to Web design 101 type of decisions, who your intended audience is, how different the content and visual presentation needs to be, etc.

By the way, I host multiple sites on my server and I also use multiple installations of DNN each with a separate database because they have different needs.  But I would not recommend you to do this unless you have full access (and control) of the server and you feel very comfortable with DNN.

That's a very good point. I do have separate domain names for many of my themes.  Some themes I may not want to mix with others, because they do not have anything to do with the other(s).

One question: Are there any negative effects to multi portal use? Is the performance of the website degraded?

That is a very big question, it will depend on the traffic of each site, the server horsepower (both IIS and SQL Server), and the line speed for the site.

But the short answer, no, the performance should be good for all the sites, specially with DNN 4.4.1.  And if you can, use HTTP compression in IIS.
