HOLY @#$%!

My thanks to Sebastian Leupold for indirectly pointing me to Shaun Mehaffie's blog of 11/28/2006 12:00 AM: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/BlogsDotNetNuke/tabid/825/EntryID/1202/Default.aspx

I followed his instructions and voila! Problem solved!  That's the good news ...

The bad news is this type of thing shouldn't happen, and I don't necessarily blame DNN.  My immediate suggestion would be to put a big skull and crossbones notice in the web.config about using SQL Server Management Studio on an SQL Server 2005 attachable database and then add in the web.config a link to Shaun Mehaffie's blog of 11/28/2006 to get yourself out the jam using it will create.

I'm not the only one to get bitten in the butt by this gotcha - about 20% of the posts in this forum have a similar or possibly related problem.

As I said previously, I'm an experienced SQL 2000 DBA and am getting my feet wet with 2005 Express, as I have been following its development over the past 2-3 years.  Attachable standalone databases presented more questions than answers to me.  Shawn's article answered a lot of those questions.  Thanks!

The instructions at that link are fine if you want the database to remain attached.  If not then after detaching from the database you will have to re-add yourself and ASPnet to .mdf and .ldf under the Security tab of Properties and give yourself Full access and ASPnet  read&execute, read and write.  You also have to add the setting I mentioned a few posts back to the web.config file.

I agree that his should have been documented better.  I spent way too many hours trying to get this basic problem fixed.

Thank you for that important warning.  I hadn't thought about the effects of detaching the database once I got it working.

I don't blame DNN as much as SQL Server 2005, which adds a lot of useful functionality, but at the same time it adds a pretty big learning curve and lots of nooks and crannies to stub your toe on.  In retrospect, using the new attachable database feature was an unfortunate decision, as evidenced by all the problems installers of all experience levels are having.

Oh well - it's been a good learning experience.
