Hi everyone,

I'm a complete rookie to dnn, but I've had a community based website up and running for almost a year.  I have loved it...but 2 nights ago...i made a huge mistake.  I ftp'ed to my website, and thought i changed directories (cd'ed) to a subdirectory to clean up some files...i accidentally deleted all the files in my root directory.  The files that were there that got wiped out are:

-rwxrwxrwx 1 user group 22891 Aug 3 2006 403-3.gif
-rwxrwxrwx 1 user group 1549 Aug 3 2006 403-3.htm
-rwxrwxrwx 1 user group 3665 Aug 3 2006 404.htm
-rwxrwxrwx 1 user group 490 Aug 3 2006 500.htm
-rwxrwxrwx 1 user group 1884 Aug 3 2006 Default.aspx
-rwxrwxrwx 1 user group 364 Aug 3 2006 DesktopDefault.aspx
-rwxrwxrwx 1 user group 18067 Aug 3 2006 development.config
-rwxrwxrwx 1 user group 363 Aug 3 2006 EditModule.aspx
-rwxrwxrwx 1 user group 820 Aug 3 2006 ErrorPage.aspx
-rwxrwxrwx 1 user group 84 Aug 3 2006 Global.asax
-rwxrwxrwx 1 user group 213 Aug 3 2006 KeepAlive.aspx
-rwxrwxrwx 1 user group 18064 Aug 3 2006 release.config
-rwxrwxrwx 1 user group 192 Aug 3 2006 RSS.aspx
-rwxrwxrwx 1 user group 503 Aug 3 2006 SiteUrls.config
-rwxrwxrwx 1 user group 807 Aug 3 2006 spacer.gif
-rwxrwxrwx 1 user group 18147 Oct 13 11:43 web.config

Has anyone ever done this and if so, is there an easy way to recover from this if you do NOT have a backup of these files?  I've contacted my hosting company and asked them if they could restore from backup and they are saying the backup files are "corrupted" and they can not restore my site.  My db is intact, and everything else should be ok...EXCEPT for the above files.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well you can do the following.

Download the version of DNN that you have and replace all of the files.  You will then need to re-modify the web.config to connect to your database.

The biggest risk you have is that by not having your validation and decryption keys you might not be able to easily get your user accounts back.  But there are ways around that as well.

Once you get that the site itself should come back.  That is as long as you didn't have any modules that required additional web.config settings.

If you need any individual help, shoot me an e-mail and I can see what I can do to help you.  Especially with your user accounts...

I had all kinds of modules in use....what modules would require additional web.config entries?  I downloaded the version of dnn that i am currently using, and it did not have a web.config file in the zip files.  I renamed the release.config to web.config, and when i hit my webpage again, it started to re-install.  It said there was an error connecting to my db??

You were correct in renaming the release.config to web.config.  I forgot to mention that in my last post.

As for which modules might have additional web.config settings, that is typically a very small number of modules, NONE of the core modules have entries in the config either.  It is just something that i know some items have required in the past.  Also in the case of my site I have a site map httphandler that is outside of the normal for DNN.

As for not being able to connect to the database you will want to be sure to specify the same server, user, password, and any others options you set before to connect to the database.  If you are running on a 4.x version of DNN also make sure you changed both connection strings.
