Does anyone have the need to separate edit and management tasks? The difference, in my mind, is the ability to add/update/delete rows or manage fields and other table options. Currently, to the best of my knowledge, DNN does not support this separation. Implementing a work-around should be fairly easy for this capability. Would anybody else benefit from this?

In addition to separating edit and management tasks, I've actually had a request to allow specific people to edit specific rows. This means that the edit permission would only allow a person to update the data in one row (not add/delete rows). This would be harder to implement, but still possible given a "reasonable" amount of time. Would anyone benefit from this?

Finally, given the previous requirement, I can see a request coming down the road to support row edit for only certain fields. For instance, a trouble ticket table might allow end users to update contact information, but not display internal-only comments. I may not have explained this last one very well, but does anyone seeing themselves using a feature like this? Again, this would be slightly harder than the first, but easier than the second capability.

BTW, I'm not using UDT for trouble tickets. That was just the first example I could think of

Just saw this - and I can see lots of value in such a feature. Finely grained permissions (ie field/row edit capability) would be awesome but in the short term it would be great if you could assign edit permissions to a user without giving them 'admin' rights for that module instance.

This is the single issue with UDT that was preventing me from using it on our corporate intranet.  With some 1600 users needing the ability to add/edit records, we obviously didn't want to give them permissions to manage the UDT module.  Now that I see this will be coming in the next version, I feel comfortable implementing UDT for our many needs.  Until the next release, I will give edit permissions to only those in Admin roles whom I can trust with module admin permissions.  I assume there will be no issue in upgrading to the next release while maintaining all the data that we will be working to input using the current module?  - Mike

Hi Mike,

You are right. Next version will have more permissions; edit, add and delete permissions can be designed to roles. Furthermore you can restrict your user to modify only their own items.

Data structure will not be changed, so there will be no issue. You are able to set up your desired permissions.

There is only one restriction; you can’t use the “modify only own items” permission with your old data. This permission needs the new CreatedBy-Datatype that will be introduced next version. You can’t add a CreatedBy Column to existing data.
