you need to copy both, files and database.

Zip the dnn installation folder with all sub folders and unzip them on the target server, set write permissions for the virtual user (in Win2003 Server "Network Service" by default). Setup a web site pointing to this directory in IIS according to the installation instructions for your version.

If you don't use a file base database for SQL Express (having a .mdf file listed in the connection strings in your web.config), backup/unmount your database and restore/mount it on the target SQL server and grant dbo permission for the SQL database user. Adopt the connection string in web.config to point to the new database.

ok, so now, I was thinking, instead of transferring the portal to one server from another. If it is more advisable for me to just upgrade the DNN v2 to v4? If I upgrade the DNN into v4, will the portal skin, container be affected?
Please advise.

thank alots.

if you upgrade from DNN 2, I recommend to do this in steps:

  • make sure to use latest DNN 2 version (2.1.2)
  • first upgrade to DNN 3.0.13
  • then upgrade to dnn 3.3.7
  • afterwards upgrade to 4.4.1

Skin and containers might be affected, if you only have .ascx and no html versions, that can easily be reparsed. Make sure to follow the installation guide.

Good Luck!

Ok. Very sorry as I am another question as I am doing a voluntery work for my community. If I use my PC(installed with DNN v4.3.1), to create a module, if is is possible for me to export the module package and import to the server with DNN v2?

Right now, I am having serious headache as I need to create one module to meet the requirement. However, my client DNN is merely V2 and the last developer have not leave any document behind. He have also create some module and make some configuration. Therefore, I am very worry that if I do the upgrading, will the content or the configuration went missing? And also, I have very little knowledge with DNN v2 which seem to be quite different with DNN v4. Is there any way to backup/export the whole portal using host access (as the last developer throw the files every where with different version) and do the upgrading and if anything goes wrong, I can still 'de-grade' the portal and restored the old portal?

Please help. Thank you.
