Has anyone succesfully used an already existing Membership database for membership, role, and profile data?

I have an existing web application which is currently in production. We are getting ready to role out DNN on another website, same host, and was wondering if anyone has successfully rolloed out DNN and tied the Membership data into the DNN app from another website database. I would like the DNN data to reside in its own DB, but the membership data to pull from a different "preexisting" DB.

It seems like it would be straight forward, just create another database connection setting in the web.config file. I just wanted to probe you folks to see if anyone has done this, or attempted it and gather any info I can. The main place I see where problems might occur is with the "legacy" app setting of the DB connection, but not sure of the implications here.

Many thanks for any feedback!

I noticed one small issue with what I am attempting. The existing database has the membership passwordFormat="Hashed" and DNN by default used passwordFormat="Encrypted". This may cause an issue when users attempt to retrieve passwords.

I haven't dug yet, but does anyone aware of any built in features in DNN that handle this instance? When retrieving a password when using passwordFormat="Hashed" the password cannot be retrieved, it needs to be regenerated, a new password created. Was this thought of in the DNN application and handled? I am going to attempt to dig to find out, but does anyone know?

Once again, many thanks,
RA

I have copied a collection of ASP.NET user profile accounts into the DNN database and connected to it....however I have not tried pointing DNN to an external databse for membership.  I am not sure if that is supported by the DNN core..
