I have a project where i need to have a menu that runs across the top of the page and when an item is selected i need the menu on the right of the page to change to suit the selection.

i was thinking that i would use 2 solpart menus, the one at the top set to display root items only and the one on the side to display sub items only.

is this the way to do it and if so what properties can i use to help IE CSS or control attributes.

thanks very much for any help.

You do not need to use 2 SolPartMenu menus . . . I am not certain it would work if you use 2 . . . I would be interested to know if anyone else have tried it and the results.

What we do to achieve what you described is to have the SolPartmenu at the top and have a Text/HTML module on the left-or-right sides of the page--simply drop a Text/HTML module into the LeftPane or the RightPane, for example, if you are using the default DNN skin. The Text/HTML module would hold the hyperlinks (whether they be text links or graphical links) for the selected top menu. You may also consider the Links module instead of the Text/HTML module.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jen thanks for the reply.  your idea seems to be quite good but i would be concerned with the work involved in keeping it all maintained.  say i wanted 5 links at the top and each of the 5 links to have 10 subs on the right.  this could get quite messy.

I have managed to find a half solution that im half happy with.  i did use 2 solpart menus and i set the top horizontal menu roots to be 'disabled' so they cant be selected.  you have to select a sub item.  then the second solpart on the left i set the attribute of 'level=same' in the ascx.  what that does is change that menu to only display the current level which is the sub level.

the only thing i dont like is that i have the display the submenus on the top as a flyout, you cant do this technique by having the user click the root item.  its not ideal but all its all we can manage im afraid with this heavily bugged menu.

ps im using dnn 3.2

Sorry . . . I've been bogged down by projects here at the office . . .

I don't recall updates and maintainence being a beast. I don't remember correctly . . . but I seem to have encountered an addition of a new page coming automatically with the LeftNav links. But I can be wrong on this . . . it's not every day that a new page needs to be added. In any case, it's relatively painless as most of the work is really copy-and-paste of the side links, and it is work done at the building of the site. You can check out our client's site to see if this is the look and feel you want for the menus . . .

I went to dnndev [dot] im [dot] com [dot] au, but there is no menu like you spoke (wrote) of.

I have a question for you: How did you disable your top horizontal menu roots so that they cannot be selected? Which attribute/value pair did you use?
