I may be limited to a Vista Home Basic machine for a short while.  I think that Vista Home Basic supports Visual Dev Express and SQL Express, but does anyone know if I can run and do DNN dev work on it?

If you can get IIS installed you should be ok, as far as I know.

I am using DNN and visual studio on Vista Home Premium and Ultimate without difficulties and I am not aware of limitations that would stop you from using it on home basic.

Vista Home Basic does not support IIS, it cannot be installed.  However, you can install Visual Web Dev Express and you will be able to do development and run DNN within its development environment.  You will not be able to use the PC to host sites you may want to access externally.

See this site for IIS7 features per flavor of Vista:  http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/library/0d35e92b-ddb7-4423-b1e5-df550e25713b1033.mspx?pf=true
