One of my client's is using a DNN site to send a newsletter on a daily basis.  They have nearly 3000 registered users.  Many of these users are complaining that they're receiving emails with "odd characters" or "squiggles."  We've done a test on the MS Word cleanup button and it doesn't help.  Additionally - text generated by DNN (i.e. Dear Username) also contains the squiggles.

I can't actually SEE the squiggles myself, because my email editor (Outlook) cleans them up.  Some of the recipients complaining are receiving email through earthlink.  Some, Yahoo.

My client is so frustrated, they want to transfer their daily newsletter to another service.  But, that doesn't solve the problem and actually creates a few more

Any thoughts?  Help?

To be quite honest, if you are sending that many emails you should either move to a service or you should consider buying some module that is built for this. Most email clients like yahoo, earthlink, etc behave quite differently from Outlook and can only handle valid HTML 3.2 compliant emails. Basically, what I am saying here is your client needs to learn what can/cannot be done for sending emails. In fact, they may have this very same problem with another service provider as it depends on their HTML. (My company does email marketing services for some of our clients).

In addition to the HTML, you have other things such as list management, white listing, CAN SPAM compliance, etc to worry about.

You're not actually suggesting that we're sending these emails from Outlook???  We're sending them from the DNN newsletter mod.

If I don't understand the limitations of the Newsletter, please enlighten.  However, the problem isn't with the number -- doesn't matter if I send 1 or 1000 -- there are still squiggles.

I know you are not sending these in outlook. Yes, the number does matter when it comes to mass delivery because the higher the number, the broader the audience (more than likely) the more concern about following guidelines, whitelisting, etc and also things like the squiggles. I cannot spend the time it would take to educate someone about this, but please understand these are very valid concerns when hitting that many people and also what needs to be understood about how the various sites read the HTML of your email.

Where could I learn about the squiggles?  Also ... Yahoo, Earthlink and Hotmail seem to have problems in receiving. What's the point of the double opt-in feature?

(Sorry for the delay in getting back to this.  My client is transferring all their emails to another service.  But that doesn't solve the problem with their website.)

I still have a problem -- to me... DNN has this mass email mod and now I learn that it's not an effective tool to communicate with a base of users that register on the site.  To me, that defeats the purpose of having the registrations.  So -- a successful website that gets thousands of registered users now has to also incur the cost of another mass email system?  I really don't understand.   I'd like to use DNN for a number of client who will want to send monthly emails... what to do?

And yes... I understand a little about mass emails... but what I'm saying is that even if I send ONE email to ONE person, it has the squiggles.  (Earthlink user.)
