Thank you Sebastian,

I had actually just gone in and turned off the scheduled file sync, thinking that it may be causing the problem. I also turned off the autosync in the Host Settings, but I will turn it back on.

I just had another department contact me to let me know that none of their file links are working. Sure enough, the FileIDs of each file that is linked to in their Links module have been changed.

You say that FileID values cannot be altered, but that rather the files are being deleted and recreated. Could the scheduled file sync have been deleting and recreating the files on its own, or is there something else that could be doing that?

Here are a few other questions that I would appreciate your input on:

  • How long of a cache setting should I be giving my Announcement modules?
  • How often should I go in and perform a recursive manual file sync? And should I have the root directory selected when I do it?
  • I have never quite understood what the difference between the standard file sync and the recursive file sync is. Does the standard sync only synchronize the selected file or folder? Does the recursive sync synchronize the selected directory and all of that directory's children, or does it synchronize the entire contents of the File Manager?

Thank you,
Kurt

Kurt,

  • not the files are deleted and recreated, but the representing records in the files table
  • scheduled job tries to sync files table with physically existing files. if the job fails to access physical files, it will delete associated entry, if he finds a file not listed, it creates an entry.

Other questions:

  • optimal cache dration setting depends, how quick updates shall be visible to users, usually 20 minutes shall be a good start
  • recursive syncs are needed, whenever you create / rename / move / delete folders residing in your DotNetNuke portal folder from external using Windows file manager or using FTP.
  • standard sync only syncs current folder. Same is done via auto sync.
  • I am not sure, how recursive sync actually works, I usually perform it, when I am in root folder.

Cheers from Germany,
Sebastian Leupold

This error just randomly appeared for me too...

I was modifying a completely separate module on the page trying, in vain, to make custom profile properties work, and this module kind of randomly broke.  I replaced the modified module file with the original backup, but the Announcements module is still broken...

Error: Announcements is currently unavailable.

DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: Must specify valid information for parsing in the string. ---> System.ArgumentException: Must specify valid information for parsing in the string. at System.Enum.Parse(Type enumType, String value, Boolean ignoreCase) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Announcements.Announcements.get_viewType() at DotNetNuke.Modules.Announcements.Announcements.bindData() at DotNetNuke.Modules.Announcements.Announcements.OnLoad(EventArgs e) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

Awesome.

Update: the error only appears to show when I'm looking at the page in Edit mode.....
