So, IIS is not redistributable, huh? You can't market your great DotNetNuke-based web applications and modules to home- and office desktop users becasue they either don't know how install IIS or have Windows XP Home altogether?

Well, these troubles are all in the past now. Take all new, free UltiDev Cassini web server - a web server based on Microsoft Cassini web server sample, but significatnly improved by UltiDev LLC. We were able to run DotNetNuke 4.00.02 on our version of Cassini 2.0, including DNN site installation, site management by admin, and anonymous site browsing. Our version of Cassini web server

  • Comes ready for redistribution with VS.NET merge module.
  • Runs as a windows service;
  • Hosts and runs multiple ASP.NET applications;
  • Provides both nice UI and simple API for configuring web applications;
  • Comes in two flavors: 2.0 version for ASP.NET 2.0 applications, and 1.1 for applications compiled for ASP.NET 1.1.

Just download Cassini and run application with it to see whether they are compatible.

To find out how you can create VisualStudio Setup Project for your DNN-based (or any other ASP.NET) application that will include redistributable Cassini server component, please check our Cassini Devloper's Guide.

Although we didn't test it yet, you should be able to use UltiDev Cassini 1.1 to run DNN 3.x applications. Use our forum to let us know if you were successful.

Enjoy,
UltiDev Team.

Have an idea how to do that automatically:

1 - install Cassini

2 - install Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005

3 - install DotNetNuke 4.x with a base of already existing data

4 - Configure the host files with the IP Cassini web server and the dotnetnuke alias

5 - Open the web site with IE

We actually have a package we use with some of our high end clients where we can ship them an entire DNN install on CD and it handles installing .NET 2.0, SQL Server 2005, and then sets up a customized version of Cassini that is bound to a new, local copy of DotNetNuke.  It is pretty nifty for demoing web apps to clients.
