Would it be feasible to incorporate Map Provider -kind of functionality which is used by the Map module to display selected map type ? This could enable possibility for users to select from several current map providers like Google Maps, Virtual Earth/Live Local, Yahoo Maps just the way Rich Text Editor provider model is implemented currently.

The interfacing between module and provider(s) could be easily standardized since each map application seems to provide similar kind set of functionalities (pins, routes, business search, location search, "nearby services").

For reference implementation module there could be current Google Maps implementation but if some other mapping application seems to gain more functionality/endorsement by users there could be others implemented as well.

Actually - that is the heart of the DNN Map, which is the reason it has taken so long to get out the door here! The entire platform works off a provider model allowing you to swap in our out any of the components, from the data, administration, interface (Which provides the ability to switch between any browser based map platform), and geo locators.
