In the DNN 4 book the author mentions that the Core Forum Module is lightweight. Is this a fact? If so, in what capacity? What is missing?

I have looked at ActiveForum, and what I get from the documentation is that it reproduces the Core Forum functionality, with more skin option... Does anyone have more to say about this?

The way I see it is that the core DNN forums module is a great forums module, but it doesn't have all of the bells and whistles that some of the other forums have.

Some of these items include post attachments and other advanced forum features.  I am not sure which additional functionality the activeforums product provides over the core DNN forum other than the skinning.

Except that everything about ActiveForums actually works ... which is more than I can say for my experience with the "core" forum.

I would not call the core forum lightweight. For instance: the module's stylesheet is over 700 lines deep...

As far as simplicity of organization and execution- I would consider Presstopia Forum. It is easy to deploy, easy to skin, and has been virtually bombproof for me.

We are using 3.20.08 and we are able to place attachments to posts... The only bug we have encounter so far (after 2 months of use), is with avatars. The user is able to select/upload the avatar, but the reference to it does not get saved in the database (the file is uploaded to the server). From my reading in the forum this would not be a forum bug but a bug from the gallery component it relies on.

I have raised the question on this forum as I can't get a straight answer from ActiveModules. When I ask them what's better with ActiveForums they tell me that it "has many more features" but they are unable to give me specifics.

I would like to take this platform to cut through the chase and go beyond the marketing lingo, and really understand what is the real difference between the two products so that I could make an informed decision. So far I get these differences:
  •  stability of the code (+),
  • more flexible skinning engine (+),
  • ability to use mail connector module (+),
  • license limitation and fee (-).
Please complete with your findings. Thank you.
