Ok - I have exhausted my knowledge on this.  It appears to be a  server config issue not a DotNetNuke issue,

If you can debug put a break point in GetDomainName in Globals.vb and find out what Request.Url is when using the domain name and when using IP.

If you can't debug add some code the log the value of Request.Url in both scenarios.

If the Request.Url is the same is both cases then its is due to ASP.NET/IIS etc.

Hi I have pretty much the same problem.  Here are the details:

 - using DNN 3.2 (actually, I'm using a special version of DNN provided by Telerik)
 - My ISP initially gave me a temp URL of http://site315.mysite4now.com/amerinursery, and DNN was installed with this address which now shows up as the first (default) portal alias
 - I requested a new URL that wouldn't require a subdirectly so that the paths would be consistent between development and production.  The ISP gave me amerinursery.mysite4now.com.  I have added this URL to the site's alias list.
- When you browse to this new URL, however, it ends up resolving to the old URL.  I initially thought that the ISP had put in some sort of redirect.  However, I am able to browse to a test file:  http://amerinursery.mysite4now.com/mytest.html.  This leads me to believe that problem lies with DNN and not some IIS setting.

Not only is this an issue now, but of course I will eventually need to migrate to the production URL.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thx,
Jason Lichon

When I delete the original IP address from the portalalias table, and put in www.mydomainname.com the portal will not start at all. The w3wp.exe runs at about 60% CPU and the portal never starts, but CPU load doesn't decrease.

Yes I have friendly urls on (I think, I will have to check).

There seems to be this issue alot. I have run other asp portals without this issue. I really don't want to go back to MS sharepoint (which also runs OK)

Thanks,

FIXED!!!!

As I thought, there was not a server config issue. To many other portals have run on this server. It was DNN. I re-installed as stated above, entered in my correct http alias, but this time turned off friendly url's and now is resolves to the correct url - www.mydomainname.com. instead of my local IP address.

Thanks!!!! I will keep testing a post for everyone else.

One more tip for users hosting DNN on internal servers.....

Although the fix CNurse turned me on to did work, when you access the portal from the internal network, the URL still shows the local IP address (or in some cases "localhost"). Don't let this confuse you. I have RDP access to servers outside my network and when I accessed the site from these "outside" resources, the URL is correct with my "http alias" I had entered - www.mydomainname.com. So once you turn off "friendly URLS" (under the host account) make sure you test the URL's from an outsite source. You should see the correct URL.

Thanks again,

Cdttg
