Hello

The DB that DNN creates under the app/data folder is an sql server express DB ive been told, is the odbc driver for that included in DNN? In a remote hosting environment, what server protocolls must be installed besides .net framework for the sql server express DB to work, or should it work as provided?

regards
Torbjörn

TorbjörnB:

The database questions you made are quite common, but the thing is that even though the DB file is present in the App_Data directory, you still need the SQL Server Express 2005 software installed on the machine that will run DNN.  It is now easier to deploy the database by just copying it there, but the SQL Server Express 2005 engine must be installed separately.  You can download it for free from this page: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/express/default.mspx.

By the way, DNN does not use ODBC, it uses ADO.Net instead.  ODBC is not the preferred way to connect to databases any longer, it is kind of an ancient technology.  ADO.Net, available as a built in function in .Net, is much more sophisticated in many aspects.  Also, when SQL Server is running on the same machine as DNN, it can be used using Shared Memory access, which is more efficient than any of the other networking protocols.

Since you are on a shared hosting environment, they have to install and provide SQL Server for you.

Hope this helps.

Carlos
