Tom,

Do a search in Google for "named anchors SEO". You will find a lot of pretty knowledgable people that disagree with you.

Technically, it depends on the search engine in question. I have read that it offers no benefit in Googles bot, but that it does in others.

It's very difficult to get a definitive answer on this, because most of the "in the knows" are basing it upon either their opinion or passed on opinion from others.

Judging from what I've read and from what I've experienced, it certainly won't hurt to have them.

But then again, it is entirely my opinion...

I agree with Ed.  SEO is more of an art than a science for sure.
There will always be disagreements because there are multiple search engine crawlers and indexers with their own secret, complex, and constantly changing algorithms.

FWIW, here's my subjective opinion on the specific topic:

Keywords in anchor names are not going to weigh in nearly as heavy as good keywords in the descriptive text and title attribute of an inbound link.
It doesn't hurt to always keep keywords in mind when building these, but a higher priority should be placed on where the name is attached.
In other words, it should be attached to a good keyword loaded H1, H2, or H3 enclosed title to get maximum benefit as was pointed out.

Thanks for the advice to search on "named anchors SEO" Ed.  I had a few minutes so I decided to do that and I just found a really good SEO checklist

Well - I'm not a programmer and built my site entirely in MS FP since year 2000. The last years I used a FP add-in that helpt me update some head-keys. I have since my start parked in the top leed searching for Whiplash in Google.

A normal user doesn't care about whats going on in a software or program background - however they care about the result.

Thanks John, that's exactly my point. There are so many more important factors to consider than named anchors.

I think we also need to be sure to understand the difference between keywords in achor text (#4) and named anchors (#27).

Here is another excellent up-to-date list on Google search engine ranking factors.
