Universal List
The Easy Application Builder for DNN
Universal List by CookDNN lets you design modules across your DotNetNuke website to create, read, update and delete custom data with no programming. Packed with powerful features, UL offers bulk data importing and exporting, searching, sorting, filtering, pagination, relational dropdown lists, email notifications, and role-based security. You can also customize the look and feel of your application using basic HTML or CSS tags in our simple token-based templates. Best of all, Universal List stores all of your data in DNN's SQL database - not in XML or intermediary tables - and uses AJAX for fast page responses without postbacks. The only question is - how are you going to use it?
Non-technical website administrators use Universal List to build, modify and manage custom, data-driven website applications like Product Catalogs, FAQs, Blogs, Product Reviews, Member Lists, Photo Albums, Image Galleries, Information Request Forms, Classified Listings, etc.
Simple to Use
Without writing a line of ASP or SQL code, Universal List lets you create database tables and fields and link the data from one table to another. (If you're unfamiliar with databases, think of an Excel spreadsheet - where the Table is the spreadsheet and a Field is a column.) Once you've identified what data you want to capture, a data input form, list/grid page, and record details page are automatically created. You can fill your application with data by manually entering it into the form or importing it using a spreadsheet or XML file.
Powerful, Advanced Features
UL is as powerful as it is easy to use. Fill up your table using an Excel or XML file, export data to a report or control who can perform what actions. UL offers sorting, pagination, filtering and its own seedy search engine.
Much of UL's power lies in its easy to understand interface. There are no complicated installations or paradigms to understand. Just enter the configuration section to manage your settings and edit one of four templates. To work with your data, exit the configuration section.
Version 4.0 includes these great features:
- Easy Installation - UL installs cleanly and quickly and does not require you to make any special changes anywhere within DNN.
- The Public Side - To the users of your site, a UL is made of three pages - The data list, the record details page, and an add/edit form. You may also enable import and export of data to your users. The List page offers advanced features like sorting, search, filters, and pagination.
- The Admin Side - Administrators click the 'Configuration' link to access the control panel of UL. This section lets you create tables and fields; edit the templates which control how the data list, record details and ad/edit form pages look and work; create sort orders and data filters; control security (who can perform what actions on what data); etc...
- Build Your Own Data Structure - Administrators can create custom-named tables and fields, choose the data type for each field, and determine whether the field is required or can be searched. NOTE: UL creates actual tables and fields within your DNN database. Data is not stored in an intermediary format like XML or within proprietary tables.
- Relational Data - with a few clicks, you can create dropdown boxes which is populated with data from another table. Called "Data Binding through Cascading References," UL allows data across tables to be bound together in "One-To-One" and "One-To-Many" relationships.
- Templates & Tokens - Using HTML and CSS, Administrators can customize the layout of list and details pages plus sorting, search, filters, etc. Field names and page elements (like filters and pagination) are easily referred to within the templates using Tokens separated by delimiters (for example, to display the data in the field LastName for the current record, you simply enter #LASTNAME# into the template.
- Multiple Views For The Same Data - You can create different views (pages or modules on pages) of the same table. Hide fields or disable actions (add, edit, delete) based on security roles.
- Bulk Import/ Export - Use Excel, CSV or XML files to quickly fill in your database, create a table structure, or export records. Match database fields to spreadsheet columns and enter default values for those fields with no data.
- DNN Role-Based Security - Quickly control who can do what where. Using DNN's security roles, you can control who can view, delete, add, edit, export, import, or change data. There is also the ability to allow users to edit or delete only their own data (records entered by other users cannot be edited).
- Fast Page Loads - Working in UL is a pleasure since data is saved and displayed quickly using Javascript and AJAX without reloading the page, thus reducing the traffic to the server.
- Custom Packages - Authors can create applications using UL, save them as a package, and distribute the package for quick import onto other websites (which would need DNN 3.x or 4.x and UL). Many packages of already-created applications are available at no charge on this website.
- Keyword Search - UL provides its own built-in search feature. Users can enter multiple keywords in any order to find just the data they want.
- Sorting - Administrators can create Predefined Sorts which determine which fields in what order are sorted on data list pages. These Predefined Sorts cannot be changed by the user.
- Filtering - Administrators can define fields on which the user can filter data and can also create predefined filters to narrow record sets. The filter interface lets you create logic statements depending on the type of data. Users can also limit record sets by building their own filters.
- Pagination - By changing the parameters of the pagination token (or removing it from your template), you can control the number of records which will be displayed by default and allow a user to change this number via a dropdown box. Users can also navigate by page number.
- Notifications - When data is manually added or changed, email notifications of the current and previous data in each field (plus who and when the data was modified) are sent to the email addresses of your choice.
- Localization - Ability to change labels and words displayed throughout the module.
- Links with Parameters - Using UL, you can construct hyperlinks to internal pages or external sites by passing variables and data. This is useful when passing data to other modules on the site or external sites (like ecommerce).
- Date Picker Control - When you choose a data view type of 'date', UL automatically places a link to a popup calendar to make data entry easier.
