If you do not create a Database (as described) in the Install Guide you will get this error.

To create the Database go to App_Data folder of your website, select new item and create a Database (Database.mdf).

This assumes you want to use SQL Server Express.  If you want to use SQL Server 2000/2005 then you need to get the Install guide and follow the procedures in there to create the database and configure DNN.

I am having the same problem - Started a new post as I didn't see this one originally.  I have been through the installation guide included in the documentation download several times and can't find any reference to creating a database in the App_Data folder.  Can you please specify where in the install guide this is located.

I did create the database as mentioned above, but recieve error not connecting to database in connection string.

I created the database in SQL Express - defaults to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\DotNetNuke.mdf.  Is this not the correct way to create the database?

Thanks.

Mea Culpa - you are right.

It doesn't describe it in the Install Guide.  In 4.0.x there are instructions in the Documentation folder of the web project.  If you use the Starter Kit to create the project, the Welcome file opens automatically, and has links to the other files.

I setup the SQL 2000 DB the way it is described in the install guide. Could it be that my web config file is incorrect? This is my first step into ver 4.x, I've been using 3.x and under for a long time and have not had problems. No I see 2 sections in the web config file. Can someone post a working web config file for SQL 2000 and ver 4.2?

I also see talk of Visual Studios in the install guide. I only need that if I want to customize right? I don't need it if I only want to run ver 4.2 do I?
