to be precise, this option has been introduced in DNN 4.4.0 (there was no Version 4.1.1) and allows compression of the output files, sent to the user, by choosing either deflate or GZip algorithm. In Compression settings section, you can specify exclude paths, in DNN4.5.0, only html files get compressed. Besides there is a whitespace filter, that tries to remove unnecessary whitespace characters from textfiles, when sending it to the clients (applied to html files only as well). The regular expression used to identify omittable characters is specified in the whitespace filter expression.

AFAIK it does work in DNN 4.5.0, even with an upgraded site.
