Hi,

Just a quick question.  I'm trying to figure out how to move my DNN install up a folder into the root of my website.

I have to update the Alias in the PortalAlias table during the move process.  Since the application will basically be moved to a different directory do I need to worry about restarting the application to have the new Alias take effect?  If so how do I restart the application with a new alias once I've moved the files?  I'm not sure if the alias will still be valid in the new location.

Do you use Oracle?  Then try GoldFish.Net

Get it from CNET Download.com!

You can add your new alias before you move it.  Then when you move it the application start in the new location will pick up the new values.

To answer your question more directly though: Yes, you need to restart, and you can do that by updating the web.config file and resaving it. Just put a space in there somewhere that it doesn't matter.

Thanks John.  Just wondering if you have more then one alias:

Which Alias does it use?

For example I currently have one similar to mysite.com/DNN it doesn't let me edit it since it is in use.  If I added another one www.mysite.com will I be able to remove the first one after restarting?  Or will it just use www.mysite.com and I shouldn't worry about having the first one be mysite.com/DNN?

The alias used will be whatever is used on the Url to access the site.

The alias is a way for the framework to distinguish between multiple portals.

You can have many aliases for a single portal and when you browse to a Url that hits the dotnetnuke app the framework will lookup and try to match a url to the alias, after it finds a match it will know which portal you are requesting and load the home page for that portal.

No you don't have to worry about the old alias being in there, but if it is not valid you should remove it.  Since there is another feature that happens when the Url can not be matched to any alias.  If this happens the framework will redirect to the first alias.
