I'm about to build some custom modules and am setting up my environment. I currently have VS2005 and want to add the starter kit to make it easier to develop modules for resale.

I've read Shaun's post here: http://forums.asp.net/1114393/ShowPost.aspx which then points me to the downloads page here: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/About/Downloads/tabid/125/Default.aspx .

There is a starter kit for 4.4.1 but none for 4.5.0. Will the 4.4.1 kit be ok to use to develop modules for 4.5.0? Once I've got the basic working I intend to use AJAX. Will using the starter kit have any effect on any AJAX functionality that Ii add later? I doubt it but just wanted to check.

Until the Starter Kit For DNN 4.5 is available you can use these tutorials which do not require the Starter Kt

  • Super-Simple Module (DAL+)

  • Super-Fast Super-Easy Module (DAL+)

Great, thanks Michael, I'll give those a go.

Do you have any idea when the DNN 4.5 Start Kit will be available? I'm not being impatient as I realise these things take time, but just wondering if there's a date in the near future.

I don't know. They are working on an issue caused by long file names. However, all the Starter kit is, is a template that creates a site that is the same code that the install version has.

    You can simply:

    • install the last version of the Starter Kit
    • Create a DotNetNuke site using the latest install version of DotNetNuke
    • Open the site in Visual Studio, and the Module and Skin Starter Kit templates are available for your use.

Thanks again Michael, appreciate you taking the time.

I can confirm this works. I now have VS2005 with DNN 4.5 and the 4.4.1 starter kit installed. I'll have a crack at Shaun's walkthough (http://forums.asp.net/1114393/ShowPost.aspx) tomorrow.
