I had this same error the first time I ran the upgrade so I started double checking all my web.config (release.config) settings and down around the objectQualifier setting I found an upgradeConnectionString that was empty.

1) I populated the upgradeConnectionString value with my valid connection string

2) restored the database from my backup prior to running the upgrade

3) set the AutoUpgrade value to true

4) revisited the portal to restart the upgrade

All went well.

hope this helps

Darin

It seems that providing a prefix during SQL setup stage of the wizard fixes this for me.
