Ok, admittedly, I feel a little embarrassed at asking this question, but how do you use the DNN Blog module?  Is there a tutorial somewhere that I can read?

Now before you rake me over the coals or belittle me for something so uncomprehensively simple, I'm going to outline what I've been able to do, and what I haven't.  I'm also going to outline what I'm confused out.

I've never blogged or had a blog before so I have no real concept of how to use it.

Here is what I've been able to do:

  • Add the Blog module to a page
  • Add a Blog
  • Add an entry to a blog
  • Add another entry to the same blog
  • That's it!

Here's what I'm confused about:

  • What are all the Blog modules that are loaded?  I can understand some, like the main one to add a Blog and the Calendar and search modules.
  • How do I add a new Blog for a completely new subject?  There was an Add New Blog selection on one of the modules but after I selected that and added a new blog and entry, the Blog was no where to be found, and the selection to Add a New Blog was also gone.

If I have a Blog page as a secondary page, how can I add a module on my home page that shows the listing of blogs and entries in my Blog?

Any pleasant help will be appreciated.  Slams will just be childish.

Thanks.

I'm going to shoot for the middle ground :-)

You might try posting in the "Using the Blog" forum- there is a new project lead that seems quite responsive to following up on posts to that forum.

Personally, I gave up on the core blog module- too unwieldy for me.

Good luck!

I have to agree - I've been blogging for a while - (that's probably what gets me into hot water sometimes)

Writing a blog is painful for some, and for others, often misinterpreted since you are sharing information in only written context which really only tells part of the story. Sometimes I like to write about the experiences I've had with DNN which I think might have helped a few people along the way - and to give an honest appraisal about the application.

There are several sites and books around too that I've noticed and can give you further insight to how blogging can work for business http://www.debbieweil.com/ this is a good website to get you some ideas, in fact, a snippet from her blogs shows the following -

  • Japanese the #1 blogging language at 37% (interesting, huh?!)
  • English second at 33%
  • Chinese third at 8% (generally agreed that this number is lower than it should be because blockers prevent Technorati from counting all Chinese blogs)
  • Italian fourth at 3%
  • Farsi a newcomer in the top 10 at 1%

Now, your questions about the blogs, well I never really felt they were as good as others.. And for quite some time - nearly three years, I accepted it but when I started to take blogging more seriously I had to look for a solution.  Here's my take on the blogs here - http://blogs.ninameiers.com/2007/01/20/Why+I+Chose+DasBlogs+Over+DotNetNuke+Blogs.aspx  If you want to be serious about blogging, then you need to decide what is best for your needs. Not everything has to be DNN to make a successful DNN site. But a blog you can't work with or get the results you want might give you a frustrating experience, so you have to evaluate what's going to suit you.  While my comments about the DNN blogs might not be popular, it has very little to do with my feelings about the DNN project overall, but more to do with the purpose in which I'm choosing to write - and I wanted to fit into mainstream 'blogging' space.

http://www.xd.com.au/blogs.xd  this is the original DNN blogs I used for some time and you can compare the two if you want, but overall, I have found that moving to the new blogs format was the best move for me.

I have also seen people use the http://www.ventrian.com articles module very well - it is a cool module with alot of functionality.

We might see some changes to the DNN blogs and I would be interested in seeing how it goes for newcomers and I'm sure there are improvements being made that would probably fit plenty of users.

I hopte this gives some insight from someone who's been blogging and using the DNN blogs for about 2.5 years now.

Two things, 1) if you don't use the DNN Blog module, what do you use?  Why purchase a third party module when the DNN module is available?  My only issue is really how to use it since I couldn't find any documentation on it.

    2) I looked through the forums and didn't see the How to Use a Blog Forum.  I must have scanned all the forums any number of times and they were never separated as they are today.  I'll look around there for some answers.

I would rather not have to buy a third party module when this one is free.

    Thanks.

    Nina,

Thanks for the information.  I've looked at dasBlog and others, but I was hoping to have as much of a complete DNN experience as possible.

My primary issue with the DNN Blog module was more technical, as in how do I actually create and maintain blogs in DNN, not so much using blogs in general.

I've also heard many people refer to Ventrian, but again, I would rather not pay for a third party module if I can just figure out how to use the one that's available. I have no problem with paying for something that works and is outstanding, but my blogging needs are more "hobbyish" than necessary.  So for that reason I'll just try for the time being to stick with the DNN blog module.

But it's enlightening to know that I'm not the only one having an issue with the DNN blog module.

    Thanks.
