I'm knew to DNN so I have a simple little question. I installed v4.5.0 (the Install Package) last week and all went well. I saw that there is a new release and would like to install it but I'd like to find some installation instructions. Do I just unzip the download package on top of the current files/directories (c:/dotnetnuke) and issue http://localhost/dotnetnuke and see what happens or do I install it somewhere else?

Thanks.

Jon.

The easiest way to upgrade DNN is to do the following:

  1. Make backup of database and site (just in case there are problems).
  2. Download the upgrade package.
  3. Unzip the files to the same directory you installed DNN to the 1st time.
  4. Access the site using the same URL you used when you first installed the site.  You should see a screen showing that DNN is being upgrade and the status of the upgrade.  One completed you should be able to access the upgraded site.

You can upgrade using the install package if you want, but it is harder and requires you to backup your web.config and synce up some setting manually to work correctly.  If you want me to post how to do that just let me know, but I would recommend using the upgrade package instead of the install package.

Hmm the documentation of the upgrade package says that I should use the release.config as web.config and transfer the settings from the old web.config. Are you saying that it's not necessary? I'm running 4.4.1 atm.  Can I keep the old web.config?

Also are their stylesheets changes on the 4.5.1 vs. 4.4.1? Can I use the existing default.css and skin.css files?

always use release.config as template for new web.config.

default.css usually only gets extended and new version shall be used. Skin.css of default skins might be adopted as well to visualize enhancements.
