I have been progressing the problem this afternoon.

I followed a post that instructed me in detail on using the release.config file for the new version and to copy in my connection string, install date and machinekeys - that improved things. http://forums.asp.net/thread/955823.aspx Thanks.

Getting over the sql2005 express problems I used:

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/BlogsDotNetNuke/tabid/825/EntryID/1202/Default.aspx to great effect.

Thanks to those 2 posts.

I now have managed to upgrade from 4.0 to 4.3.7 with full functionality. Site works and I can login.

When I upgrade from 4.3.7 to 4.5.1 (or 4.0 - 4.5.1) I get the following errors and issues:

Executing script 4.04.00 Sql data provider - Error see log 4.04.00 = Error: HelpUrl

The site then opens and when I login as admin I get:

DotNetNuke Error 04.05.01 - an error has occurred.

Also noticed that the menus disappearred and +/- functionality as well until I added web site to trusted site (ie added javascript).

So I am still looking to get 4.5.1 up but am making progress.
