I am flummoxed by a weird DB problem. I installed 4.0.2 on a dedicated Win2K3 Server talking to a dedicated SQL 2005 Server. The install went smoothly and the overall portal loads and functions fine. However, most modules display this error (visible after I login as Host):

DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) at System.Data.ProviderBase.DbConnectionPool.GetConnection(DbConnection owningObject) at System.Data.ProviderBase.DbConnectionFactory.GetConnection(DbConnection owningConnection) at System.Data.ProviderBase.DbConnectionClosed.OpenConnection(DbConnection outerConnection, DbConnectionFactory connectionFactory) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.Open() at Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.Data.SqlHelperParameterCache.DiscoverSpParameterSet(SqlConnection connection, String spName, Boolean includeReturnValueParameter, Object[] parameterValues) at Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.Data.SqlHelperParameterCache.GetSpParameterSetInternal(SqlConnection connection, String spName, Boolean includeReturnValueParameter) at Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.Data.SqlHelperParameterCache.GetSpParameterSet(String connectionString, String spName, Boolean includeReturnValueParameter) at Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.Data.SqlHelperParameterCache.GetSpParameterSet(String connectionString, String spName) at Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.Data.SqlHelper.ExecuteReader(String connectionString, String spName, Object[] parameterValues) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Html.SqlDataProvider.GetHtmlText(Int32 moduleId) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Html.HtmlTextController.GetHtmlText(Int32 moduleId) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Html.HtmlModule.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

The error is misleading because the server is setup correctly and works fine with several other DNN3.x portals and indeed, with the 4.0.2 portal, but only for non-module portions. I can add pages, modify them, change module settings -- basically do everything that does not have anything to do with module data. Interestingly, admin modules work just fine, but all other modules fail. The one exception is the Image module (which I think only persists some values in the framework settings and does not have any other data).

The only thing that is out of the ordinary in this setup is that I am running SQL Server on a different port than 1433. I'm just wondering if there is something special going on at the module data level such that a connection string with an embedded port number is causing something to break.

I'm stumped. Any guesses?

Did you setup one or two connection strings ?

You will find in application settings a second connection string which is used for the non 4.X dnn modules.

I have an identical connection string in both connectionStrings and appSettings.
