I have been using DDN from version 3.xx through the various versions to 4.02 and must say that the overall operation of these versions has been met with a high level of satisfaction. However one issue continues to destroy the user experience of each version that I have failed to resolve.

The following message is often displayed when mainly for content authors but some times by visitors to any of the implementations of DNN.

A critical error has occurred.
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

From a user point of view this message frequently comes up when they click on any module's edit text, and from my own testing I have sat and clicked many times until it finaly goes to the edit page and everything contiunes as normal until you move to another edit function.

I have impliementations on a hosted site running Windows 2003, local installed on my network and standanlone installs running XP. All exibit the same behaviour. You can have a completely smooth experience or you can have a session that you just spend hours trying to get away from the error.

My standalone install has no added modules and is basically out-of-the box, I have tried all of the installtion methods including the startup kits.

I have tried implementation where SQL Server 2000 is on a separate box and also on the same box (looking for latency issues).

Thr only common factor that I can draw on is that all these edit pages use the Edit control.

If anyone has any experience in this area then I would welcome some assistance.

Cheers

Ok, moving a little bit closer to the problem.

I have noticed the following behaviour in relation to the problem posted here.

We use localization for our web sites . English - AU.

I have changed the Language from English -AU to English -US and the problem goes away. When the language is set to AU the error log reports that FTBText errors when loading a resource.

When the language is set to US the error is not logged and the Edit Test responds immediately.

Background:

We select English-AU because of suttle diferences such as the format of the date dd/mm/yyyy of course the text does not require any changes as the language is english (We could of course stick the word "Mate" at the end of every sentance <BG>)

A temporary fix would be to remove the desired language option until the problem is identified and fixed. However we would prefer to find a solution to this as soon as possible.

Perhaps someone on the localization project has tested this and can direct us to a solution?
