Background:
DNN 3.3.5
AD authentication enabled with the Domain prefix hack.  (no domain\ )

I have 1 user who has separate ID's;  1 on the core domain which DNN uses to authenticate, and 1 on a child domain with transitive trust.   This user is failing to authenticate when using the domain credentials associated with the core domain. As far as I know this is the only user affected by this.   I even went and manually created an ID (domain\userid) for this person with all the required info and it still fails.

My DNN sitelog shows an error after every failed attempt.

This is only a guess because I don't have a setup similiar to yours that I can even begin to try debugging but I have a feeling that it's trying to authenticate to the child domain first. Have you tried getting the user to set their password the same on both domains or tried pulling the domain prefix hack out (not sure how you've done it or how easy it would be for you to temporarily remove it for testing).
