Also, after manually updating the DB you MUST restart the application for the changes to take affect

Yep, have tripped over the not restarting app problem before. I'd like to move the site to https, but using http so far still redirects.

It definitely seems as though it doesn't match the new host url with that in the alias, I will try moving to a different host/folder on our server and on the original server too and post the results. I wonder if I've overlooked an authentication or application setting in the 'new' location compared to the old and that is causing the url mismatch (although nothing obvious in the address bar, and also when removing the original alias why would it cause an infinite redirection loop if they didn't match).

Thanks.

Well I think in my case it is a permissions related issue. I can move the site/virtual directory into a containing folder that is unrestricted but moving it into a folder that has user restrictions starts the whole redirection problem (I tried copying permissions to test it further but couldn't isolate what permission issue was causing the problem).

I've now moved my site to a different location instead, not sure if it's supposed to be the case but I have found that I need to give read permissions to 'Authenticated Users' group on the server otherwise the application logs an access denied in the event logs and fails to load (even when logging in with an account that does have permission for the virtual dir.).

Thanks for the assistance.
