I have searched the web for the past 3 days looking for the exact steps to install the module source file into my dnn install.  I have installed the dnn source files for 4.5.1.  Can someone list out the exact steps for loading up a core module source into the DNN source?  I am trying to debug/extend the forum project/module but I am unable to figure out extact where and what to do to load the project.  I found this on the website but I am unsure if this will actually work.  See last post here:  http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/111/threadid/109915/scope/posts/Default.aspx .

I am using
VS2005
DNN 4.5.1
IIS 5.0
XP Professional

Thanks for any input in advance
Herman.

Herman,

to modify core modules, you ideally only need to install source package like install using the installation wizard, e.g. from "install new module" in Host :: Module Definitions menu item. If this doesn't work, I suggest to install runtime version and unzip source package directly into /desktopModules/<moduleName> folder. However, if you are using DNN 4.x.x and VS 2005, you can edit native DNN4 modules only  - unfortunately many modules are still DNN3 modules (even in the core, e.g. Forums or UDT), that can run in DNN4, but not be modified without migration. I.e. you either need VS 2003 and DNN 3 to edit DNN3 modules directly or you need to migrate them to DNN4, preferable using the DNN migration wizard, and you can edit them with VS2005 and DNN4. HTH

The steps written in the post you mentioned are fairly good to laod an existing module in your source project of DNN.
