Has anyone successfully upgraded from DNN 3.x to DNN 4.x? If so, I would appreciate a list of steps you followed. I have been working on this for the better part of 2 days now with no luck as of yet. Some of the problems have been previously identified in this forum. My latest issue was getting the message "Nothing to update now" when I browse to my site. I added the InstallationDate key setting as sugggested elsewhere in this forum and now the site crashes with the message "An error has occured" an nothing else. I have read and re-read the installation docs and I am most sure that I have followed the information there.

Ultimately I want to upgrade the database from SS2000 to SS2005 as well. So far, I have a functional site with DNN 3.2.2 and SS2000.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ron Clarke

I love it when I can reply to my own posts; it means that I solved my own problem! In this case I'm not sure what I did differently but I have now upgraded my DNN 3.2.2 to DNN 4.0.2. The steps that I followed ar as follows:

  1. Copied my production folder for my site to a development system. This folder contained the production DNN 3.2.2 files for the site.
  2. Detached my database from SQL Server 2000 and copied the MDF and LDF files to the development system.
  3. Re-Attached the database on the server so my production site would continue to work.
  4. The remaining steps are now for the development system.
  5. Created a virtual directory in IIS pointing to the folder I just created from the copy above.
  6. Make sure that ASP.Net 2 is selected for the site
  7. Attached the copied database in SQL Server 2000
  8. Unzipped the DNN4.0.2 Install on top of the 3.2.2 folder.
  9. Remaned the 3.2.2 web config to web.config.322
  10. renamed release.config to web.config.
  11. Edited the web.config and changed the database information per the installation docs.
  12. Browsed to the site
  13. The upgrade worked and when I tried to go to the portal I got the message "Nothing to update at this time".
  14. Edited the web.config again and added the following to the AppSettings: <add key="InstallationDate" Value="10/10/2005" />
  15. Browsed to the site again and it worked?

I will now try to upgrade the database from SS2000 to SS2005.

So...you got DNN 4.x running on a SQL Server 2000 installation?  The next step for you was to upgrade the SQL Server to 2005.  Have you done that, yet?  Any "gotchas" on the database upgrade that you could pass along?

Thanks.

Hi Guys,

I too am interested in this answer.  I have installed .net 2.0 on the same server and will try upgrading this weekend as described above.  I have installed successfully the SQLExpress version of Sql server + msde successfully but cannot follow the documentation on where the username, password and database name appear in the web.config file. Sorry but the install doco is sadly lacking in this area :( Its becoming unwieldy)

Any ideas?

Conrad
