Hello all,

I know this is do-able, the how is the part...

I want the ability to set a portal (and sub-portals) into maintenance mode, which would mean a visitor sees a page stating nicely "Our site is undergoing maintenance at this time, please come back in a short while and visit us... blah blah"

Once it's in MM(maintenance mode) only an admin would be able to login to the portal. Anyone? Thoughts, ideas on how to do this? I know that Invision Forums has this capability (PHP) certainly it can be done in ASP.Net!

I'm curious to see if there's anything in the DNN framework for this as well...

AFAIK this is not part of DNN. The way i do this is like this:

  • make sure your site can also answer on another host header name (so add alt host header to IIS, and make sure that that alt host header is also added to the portal aliasses)
  • remove the original host header from IIS
  • Create a new IIS site with the original host header, just one page: site maintanance. The trick is to also make the 404 error page to redirect to the url of that one page.. so every request to the site will be redirected to your one replacement page
  • you can still visit your dnn installation through the alternative host header
  • Once you are ready with maintanance, turn off the alternative site (on my server it's called the Maintanance site), and put back the original host header in your dnn IIS site

I realise this scheme is a lot of work, and if you dont have your own server, its not very easy to do. I suppose it would be possible to create a HTTP module that does just this.. it would just need some secret back door to allow admins back into the site (maybe based on IP address or something)

Another method is to utilize the page view settings to hide the content pages from the users and simply have the homepage as the only visible item.  This however can reuslt in MUCH more work, but if you are on a hosted environment it is your only option.
