Hi all,

I am new to the DNN scene and I am trying to get things working on DNN.. Any help would be great.

A little about me and my site:

I am a Server Admin by day so  I am familiar with the server side functions of Win 2k3, etc..

I am testing out DNN by hosting it from home (not on port 80) on a Win2k3 VMWare machine.

I have a several questions:

  • I have a working version of 4.4.1 that I used due to the great installer someone had made (runs through a setup.exe).. How do I safely upgrade with the DotNetNuke_04.05.01_Upgrade.zip ?
  • I started to edit the default DNN page and deleted some sections that are displayed on the home page (open source, etc). How do I create a new section?
  • The image gallery is not available to add as a module, yet when I go to add an image from the images in the gallery, a nice image gallery module interface pops up. How do I use the gallery as a module?
  • How can I add a background image and still utilize a skin?
  • I have several PDF documents I want to make available for download through DNN, what is the best way to do this and what is the best download module for allowing users to upload and download files?
  • How can I re-direct (or direct) DNN to look at another folder on another server for content? (Virtual Directory or ?)

Thank you,

MISMonkey

To upgrade - read throught the following tutorial:

http://www.mitchelsellers.com/Blogs/tabid/54/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/76/Upgrading-to-DotNetNuke-451-from-4x.aspx

Not a lot of reasons to edit the default.aspx page.  To remove content from pages, you browse to that page logged in as host or admin and either edit the content of the modules or delete the module(s) altogether. To create a "new section" you need to add panes to your skin - leftpane, content pane, rightpane, etc. Take a look at one of the dnn skins included in the install.

You can either hardcode images into your skin using <skin path> tag or set background images using css.  Skinning is very flexible in dnn.

The repository module is great for letting users upload/download files.
