Hi.

Just downloaded DNN and am absolutely bemused.  Tried finding a way to open the software and use it, like I did with the demo, and have had no luck.

I looked around for instructions that came with the download and they helpfully tell me;

"As long as you selected the default options for creating a web project in Visual Studio 2005 ( selected "File System" as the Location: for your website ) and want to use the default SQL Server 2005 Express database included with the application"
Woah, woah, woah, egghead!  WTF is Visual Studio 2005?  And as for SQL Server 2005 Express, I have no clue.  Anywho, went to Wikipedia and found a slightly less than helpful explanation and downloaded SQL Server 2005 which when I start-up asks me;

Server type?
Server name?
Authentication?

You've got me there...

Can anyone please please please tell me in plain Queen's English what I need to do to get DNN working just like on the demo?

All I want to do is start creating a site.  My experience is in WYSIWYG programmes like FrontPage, which is why DotNetNuke looked so appealling and now I find I can't even find the keys to the car, so to speak.

Appreciate any guidance experts can give me!

Mark, Unless you want to go down the road of maintaining your own dnn installation (which requires that you have some knowledge about installing and managing asp.net applications), it might be a better idea to find a webhosting company that offers out of the box portal hosting. That will give you a ready to go dnn portal that will work exactly like the demo.

I offer hosting like that (dutch based), for €200 per year you get your own dnn portal, lots of extra commercial modules, professional email (smartermail), webstats (smarter stats), and of course lots of service...(if you are interested, email me on support@apollo-software.nl If you look through the resource directory (http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/ResourceDirectory/tabid/702/Default.aspx), you will find more companies offering dnn hosting, some of which offering portal hosting
