FYI

A friend sent me this fix to my problem. I haven't tried it yet, but it sounds like it makes sense. I'll post back later after I test it with the results...

"You can just copy if you are using the default connection strings and attaching the database using sql server 2005. But since you started with a 2000 database, you can't do that.
You need to install a new instance of DNN on the temp server, then copy any files (skins, root portal files, etc), and then use the old database to restore to the new database.
 
The difference is very likely due to the machineKey entry in the web.config file. The validationKey and decryptionKey must match settings on the server. This makes if difficult to simply copy DNN web sites, especially if they are using a database that is created with sql server rather then being in the App_Data folder of DNN and attached when needed. Of course, the former is the best, as attaching is slower performance wise."
