Hi all,

I've just migrated a 4.5.1 site (in test phase) from a host to my local server (yes, I am a bit backwards every now and then).  Everything has gone well other than the links have curiously been broken.  Specifically:

My migration has worked perfectly (content, layout, skins etc.) other than the above.  The migration was done as follows:

  • added new HTTP alias to the portal.  Now we have: hosted alias "mycoolsite.myhost.com" + new alias "localhost/mycoolsite" ready for the trouble-free migration to my local server
  • copied all files to "localhost/mycoolsite", created with correct permissions etc.
  • restored database to local server (SQL2K)
  • made necessary changes to web.config
  • fired up the site and "voia!" - all is well other than all entered links and images are referenced incorrectly

So is this a function of my alias entry or is it something else I may have done incorrectly?  Of course I could relink all the links and image files manually but this is the modern age and I don't think I need to!  :-)

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

David Eldridge (Sydney)

Which links aren't working? Are they links in Text/HTML entries? You might take a look at Engage: F3, a module I wrote that allows you to search for strings in your Text/HTML modules that are hardcoded, for cases just like this. If your links are "/linkclick.aspx" they are going to default to the root, so you'll have to edit them to not link to the root. F3 allows you to search and links you to the edit for each module. You can download it for free at www.engagemodules.com

If you're having problems in your skins you may need to reparse your skins as they might be hardcoded to the root rather than the path on your local machine.

Dear Chris,

many thanks for your response.  Indeed these links are all in Text/HTML modules.  I appreciate your kind suggestion to use your tool for this.  However, is this likely to be an ongoing requirement?  I am concerned that DNN defaults to these absolute links in the first place.

Given that you've taken the time to write Engage: F3, I'm guessing that this isn't something easily configurable in DNN.  I thought I saw something in the 4.5.3 upgrade that may address this issue (going from my poorly memory)...

Anyway, many thanks and I will take a look at your utility.

Many regards,

David Eldridge (Sydney, Aust)
