After trying to install DotetNuke for better than 3 days, I have got to say, that this is the worst piece of software to install.
I have tried several tutorials that say "follow these steps and you will have a working site!" Don't you believe it!!!
You would think that such a project would have an installation wizard which would insure that all permissions and such are taken care of.
SInce I need to use DotNetNuke, would it be too hard to ask if a real set of installation / configuration instruction, that really works, be provide with the downloads?
So....how do I really install and configure this application??????
not too sure what your actual problem is - however you seem to mixing windows problems with dnn problems. If you just want to install on your local computer then first you must learn to use your operating system first - learn how to set up IIS and configure a web site set the permissions etc for that web site - this has really nothing to do with DNN its simply Microsoft windows
once you have learn the basics on your operating system then download the install package and unzip it into the web site folder. If you do not have a sql server already installed on your OS then either buy one or download the freebe and install it and read its documentation on how to set up a database.
Once you have the basics on the OS under your belt then simply browse to defalt.aspx and it will install DNN on your local server - real simple - the hardest bit is understanding your operating system which no matter how you say it is not a reason to downgrade DNN.
If you want to host dnn on your hosting site then on your hosting providers support site you should find help docs on how to use the control panel to create the database and upload the zip file etc. Once you do this then again simply browse to the default.aspx and it will install. Pretty simply as far as DNN is concerned
If you want to change the code or write extra modules then go out and buy VS2005 read the docs that come with it and learn the language and over time depending how good you are you will be coding -
If you really are having problems with setting up your OS and IIS etc then this really has nothing to do with DNN - browse to a site such as protonic.com and they will help you setup your windows OS correctly.
Finally if you cannot setup your OS and IIS correctly then how the hell do you know that DNN sucks untill you configure your OS correctly you can't run not only DNN but other portal frameworks such as PHPNuke and Joomla etc in fact you will not be able to run any .net applications.
for IIS problems browse to a site such as http://www.iisanswers.com
for OS problems brows to a site such as http://www.protonic.com/
for DNN problems then this forum is best but so far you have not detailed any particular DNN problem.
